Petroleum Development Oman

Junaid Mohiddin Ghulam is presently the Field Development Manager at Oman’s National Oil Company, Petroleum Development Oman LLC. PDO’s Field Development Centre annually generates 12-15 field development plans a year maturing some total 300 mln bbls of oil supporting average production of 50,000 boe/d over next five years. His broad 23 year work experience ranges from front-end project leadership of large thermal EOR 8 billion barrel ultra-heavy oil fields to field development planning of deep gas condensates to water-flooding in complex clastics to developing people motivation and recognition schemes, spanning various international postings in Oman, the USA and the Netherlands. He holds an honours BSc in Construction Management & Engineering from University of Reading in the UK.

He has been an active volunteer of societies & networks both within PDO and outside as SPE member for past 20 years and he has actively written and presented papers at international conferences and severed on regional executive committees. As the current SPE-Oman Section Chairman, he aspires to make SPE Oman a key technical knowledge enabler in overcoming challenges faced by Oman’s oil and gas industry. He is the recipient of the 2014 SPE Regional Service Award, a member of its Century Club & inducted into the SPE League of Volunteers.

His 23 year career to date itself has been unique in that he progressively advanced along the hydrocarbon chain and geological complexity levels; from the very simple to the most complex. Following his well-site and field exposure assignment, he began with reservoir engineering of dry gas in carbonates (Yibal Natih Government Gas Field) followed by gas condensates in deep laminated clastics (Oman LNG Fields) to water-flooding light oil in channelized South Oman sandstones to eventually EOR steam-flooding of ultra heavy oil in Canadian sandstones (Shell’s Peace River - 8 billion barrel ultra-heavy Canadian oil field). Following a fulfilling six year assignment with Shell Oil USA, he returned back to PDO in 2009 to become Head of Value Assurance followed by team leader for thermal well and reservoir management. In 2010 he was appointed as the Leader of PDO’s largest oil producing cluster of oil fields at Nimr. With a current daily oil production in excess of 100,000bbl/d, he was responsible for managing not only PDO’s largest producing cluster but also the one with one of the largest EOR growth potential. Since 2015, he is the manager of PDO’s think tank, the corporate Field Development Centre. He also serves as the sponsor of the PDO’s YP community.
